Tech Tip: Need Help With a Differential Diagnosis?

Isabel, a differential diagnosis checklist tool, can help you broaden your differential diagnosis skills. Isabel’s developers refer to it as a point of care knowledge organizer, but it can also be a teaching tool and skill enhancer.

Isabel is available as an app or it can be fully integrated with an EMR system. As a stand-alone app, Isabel is simple to use. Just enter a patient’s age, gender, and positive clinical features and the system will return the results.

With the integrated version, Isabel will take the information directly from EMR. The system will immediately return 10 diagnoses with items flagged as “Don’t Miss Diagnoses.” To view a more comprehensive list, simply click to see the additional diagnosis.

You can choose how to view the results by sorting them by most relevant (default list) or by the ‘Don’t Miss Diagnoses’, as well as by specialty. You can use the causative drug search to find a list of likely medications that might cause the patient’s symptoms.

Isabel also has a list of potential bioterrorist agents. Select the diagnosis most like your patient’s presentation and get additional information about each diagnosis by clicking the item. Isabel’s database contains information from textbooks, journal abstracts, and links to institution-defined web-resources, guidelines and protocols.

You can also customize Isabel to include your specific institutional knowledge resources, protocols and guidelines. In addition, Isabel can be used to capture CME.

Session information is captured and stored and can be used for recording category 1 CME credits within the normal workflow. In addition to an integrated product, Isabel offers apps for both Apple and Android Devices.

For Apple devices, it requires iOS 4.3 or later. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but it optimized for the iPhone 5. The app is free to download, but you will need to purchase a subscription to access the database. The subscriptions are available weekly, monthly or yearly.
