And it’s been doing some major jockeying in the healthcare race, including the beta site, Google Health, the start of what the Seattle-based company hopes is a next-generation health system, empowering consumers to create their own personal health records (PHR).

Earlier this month Google Health unveiled its new telehealth service. Google’s telehealth service works along the same lines as other telehealth programs. The patient consults with a doctor remotely via the phone, email or video conference. What makes Google Health’s program unique is that it employs the MDLiveCare platform.

While the president stumps for healthcare reform, here is yet another reminder of how EMRs (Electronic Medical Records) just might not be the instant cure that fixes the ailing healthcare system. The Obama administration is making an ambitious push to accelerate the adoption of EMRs, with the goals of lowering the cost of care, improving outcomes, and widening access. But the computerization of health records is a “steamroller” that threatens small physician group practices and might force further consolidation in the vendor marketplace, says Cambridge, Mass., business analyst Leonard Fuld, who shared his “war game” findings with the New York Times.

Recently, the Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC) posted updated criteria for its accreditation program and invited the public to comment on it. The nine programs up for review range from Application Service Provider-Electronic Health Records to HNAP Medical Billers.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) act, a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment act was put in place earlier this year. HITECH designates $33 billion to healthcare IT. One of most talked about provision in the act is that it allows payments to providers that demonstrate “meaningful use” of a certified electronic health record.

The goal of the CCHIT or Certification Commission for Health Information Technology is to facilitate the adoption of electronic health records. Since it was founded in 2004, the CCHIT has been working tirelessly to develop criteria for certifying electronic health records.

Recently WebMD released Medscape Mobile, an application that allows physicians to access the Medscape features from the mobile device of their choice. The fact that the application is available for a variety of mobile devices like Blackberry and Palm should surprise no one, but the fact that the application is also available for the iPhone or iPod Touch might.

Dr. John Halamka leads the powerful HITSPA (Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel), which is working on specs for electronic health records and interoperability, which is much easier said than done. In an interview that I did with Halamka not long ago, the healthcare leader (he’s CIO of CareGroup Healthcare System) emphasized the importance of having a business case for technology.
