E-mail at the push of a button is a new computing trend picking up speed among physicians in need of instant communication. Experts project that "push e-mail" will eventually replace the need for pagers because it offers a secure forum to send and receive messages without the time lag associated with traditional e-mail use. Currently, LongCall Technologies provides a secure e-mail service that supports wireless access through Research in Motion BlackBerry handhelds. While LongCall recommends the use of BlackBerry devices, it also supports handhelds that run on Microsoft Windows Mobile and Palm OS. The service is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and is structured around Microsoft Exchange. In all, an annual subscription can be purchased for under $400. No special software or hardware is required to enroll in the program. The only prerequisite is an office computer with Internet capabilities and a standard Web browser. Furthermore, the subscription comes with a licensed copy of Microsoft Outlook. Instant access isn't the only major benefit of the push e-mail service. The handheld's data is stored on secure servers. In the even the device is lost or damage, the information can simply be transferred to a new device. In addition, physicians can wirelessly delete or file e-mail on their computer via their wireless because the information remains synchronized with LongCall's exchange server. Lastly, push e-mail benefits both large and small practices by opening a new line of communication between physicians and staff without tying up telephone lines. | ||||||||
