While the president stumps for healthcare reform, here is yet another reminder of how EMRs (Electronic Medical Records) just might not be the instant cure that fixes the ailing healthcare system. The Obama administration is making an ambitious push to accelerate the adoption of EMRs, with the goals of lowering the cost of care, improving outcomes, and widening access. But the computerization of health records is a “steamroller” that threatens small physician group practices and might force further consolidation in the vendor marketplace, says Cambridge, Mass., business analyst Leonard Fuld, who shared his “war game” findings with the New York Times.

Recently, the Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC) posted updated criteria for its accreditation program and invited the public to comment on it. The nine programs up for review range from Application Service Provider-Electronic Health Records to HNAP Medical Billers.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) act, a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment act was put in place earlier this year. HITECH designates $33 billion to healthcare IT. One of most talked about provision in the act is that it allows payments to providers that demonstrate “meaningful use” of a certified electronic health record.

iPhoneRecently WebMD released Medscape Mobile, an application that allows physicians to access the Medscape features from the mobile device of their choice. The fact that the application is available for a variety of mobile devices like Blackberry and Palm should surprise no one, but the fact that the application is also available for the iPhone or iPod Touch might.

In an interview that I did with Halamka not long ago, the healthcare leader (he’s CIO of CareGroup Healthcare System) emphasized the importance of having a business case for technology.

Earlier this year patients of Kaiser Permanente in California got the option of purchasing a portable version on their medical records. For five dollars, each patient received a password protected flash drive that contained an abridged version of his or her medical history.
