When the Locum staffing service started more than 20 years ago, it was meant to bring temporary physicians to rural areas. Still people were skeptical of temporary physicians. Now the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations has more than 5% of the physician workforce is made up of Locums.

Many temporary physicians can be deployed to areas suffering from a physician shortage.
