Shortage of Doctors in Rural Communities

An unintended side effect of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is an increased shortage of rural doctors. So reports The Seattle Times.

The influx of newly insured patients attempting scheduled medical appointments is seriously straining the local healthcare providers. The shortage is so bad in some areas that clinics are forced to turn away patients.

There are provisions in the ACA that are an attempt to alleviate the shortage, including providing funding for 550 residents to serve in rural communities. Still, additional doctors are needed in many rural communities.
