Cloud Computing & HIE

What makes a successful health information exchange? Well, according to a study done by KLAS, a healthcare market research firm, it appears that the most successful health information exchanges are those that are the least complex. The smaller health information exchanges or regional health information organizations often perform better then large-scale health information exchanges.

Unfortunately, the study also revealed that some of the earlier challenges faced by health information exchanges such as privacy and security, patient consent and financing are still present. In fact, for smaller health information exchanges or regional health information organization finding financing for the initial investment of hardware and software is often one of the largest hurdles to implementation.

Therefore, some health information exchanges are turning to cloud computing. With cloud computing the need for large-scale servers and complex software systems is eliminated. A cloud EMR allows the doctors in the HIE or RHIO to access the entire electronic medical record system with nothing more then a standard operating system and web browser. The doctors have quick and easy access anywhere-anytime.

One such system the ChartAccess Comprehensive EMR by Prognosis offers everything that a standard EMR does except the large investment for hardware and software. Instead, ChartAccess Comprehensive offers a cloud computing EMR. With this system, there is no need to install the system at every workstation. Moreover, when it is time to perform updates, it is as simple as making one update at one central location.

ChartAccess also offers health information exchanges a choice having Prognosis host the software or having a third-party application service provider host it. The goal of ChartAccess is to offer a user-friendly EMR that doctors can use with a minimal amount of training. In ChartAccess the screens that mimic e-mail interfaces to facilitate navigation and ChartAccess even has an iPhone application so doctors can view and process orders from their cell phones.
