Prescriptions Via PDA

If you do not currently have e-prescription software on your PDA, you might want to consider adding it. First and foremost, this software is a valuable time saver. A survey by Epocrates indicated that physicians could save up to 30 minutes a day, simply by using their PDA for drug reference information alone. Now consider how much additional time could be saved by using the PDA not only to reference the drug information, but to write the prescription.

In fact, the entire prescription process becomes more streamlined with the use of a PDA. Patient charts no longer need to be pulled, as all the pertinent information is displayed on the PDA; and since the information is right at the doctors fingertips, the doctor can make prescriptions out even when away the office. With the PDA a patients medication history is displayed along with any drug interaction alert, this goes a long way to preventing medication interaction problems.

PDA based prescriptions even make the refilling process smoother. Currently, the office staff can spend the better part of the day faxing and calling pharmacies to get refills authorized, now a few taps on the PDA and the refill process is complete. Imagine, the time saved with patients who have multiple prescriptions.

Of course, the most important benefit may be that software such as iScribe can substantially reduce errors due to problems with legibility, omissions or use of abbreviations that can normally occur when using paper based prescriptions. PDA generated prescriptions can also go along way to alleviating patient concerns about receiving the wrong medication due to a prescription being misread at the pharmacy.

With drug interaction alerts, on screen medication histories, and the ability to monitor whether the patient is getting their prescriptions filled or not, PDA based prescription software is another way for doctors to give their patients exceptional care.
